Students with Disabilities Consultation and Coordination Unit Activity Report:

 

Yeditepe University Students with Disabilities Consultancy and Coordination (EODC) Unit was established on 25/11/2010 to expand and increase the support given to students and people with disabilities at Yeditepe University. This Unit, whose purpose is to prepare the necessary academic environment and to ensure the full participation of the students with disabilities registered in our University to facilitate their education life, is responsible for taking the necessary measures and making arrangements. Vice-Rector is chaired by this committee, which consists of faculty members from different departments and a member of the Legal Affairs Unit. The services provided to students in the field of education, training and examination are provided within the scope of the Yeditepe University Students with Disabilities Consultancy and Coordination Unit Regulation (Annex-1) and Exam Directive (Annex-2). Yeditepe University's mission in this field is to keep individuals' accessibility to course materials and education life at the highest level. In this context, it is aimed to prepare the academic environment that students will need during lessons and exams, to analyze the problems that they may experience in the educational processes due to their disabilities, to take measures, to develop solutions and to ensure their full participation in education and physical conditions of the university. The works carried out are constantly renewing themselves within the scope of “Disabled Yeditepe” (http://engelsiz.yeditepe.edu.tr). The coordination of the unit with the students is provided either by the students or families directly to the unit or by the Disabled Student Consultants assigned in each department. Counseling support is provided to students in line with their needs and demands. Students with Disabilities Counseling and Coordination (EÖDK) Unit, as a unit affiliated to the Rectorate, Vice-Rector. Dr. It serves under the chairmanship of Fatma Yeşim Ekinci. The unit has a multi-disciplinary advisory board. Members of this board are responsible managers of faculty members and administrative units (library, sports-culture, dormitories, security) from different departments such as Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Department of Economics, Department of Psychology, Guidance and Psychological Counseling (Annex-3 ). The SCAP still provides academic, social counseling to students with 240 (5 vision, 1 speech, 4 hearing, 11 physical problems, 2 learning disabilities (dyslexia), 1 attention deficit and learning disabilities, and 186 chronic conditions). 11 of them were registered to our unit in 2018-2019 (3 ​​physical, 5 vision, 1 hearing, 1 psychological, 1 attention deficit and learning impairment) and they are being followed up. Facilities provided to students applying to our unit in the 2018-2019 academic year (Annex-4);

1) A separate class, assistant support and additional time were provided for midterm and final exams for our 7 students.

2) In line with the request of 2 students to use the pool and gymnasium, the school administration and the relevant department were contacted to provide free use of the pool and gymnasium.

3) 5 visually impaired students were provided with lecturer support or listening to the questions with computer support to read the questions during the exam.

4) The administration of our university provides food scholarship for 3 students,a service scholarship for 1 student and a dormitory scholarship for 1 student.

5) Shuttle service support was provided to 3 students who had transportation difficulties between the buildings on campus.

6) A meeting was held with 1 hearing-impaired student candidate and his mother to talk about his problems and our student was directed by contacting the relevant places for a solution.

7) Yeditepe University Dilek Volunteers Club and Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation (FTR) were contacted to find 4 volunteers who can accompany our 4 visually impaired students for 1 week at the beginning of each semesters , and from both students registered in the club and students studying in the FTR department. support was provided and orientations were carried out.

8) A meeting was held with his mother and himself in line with the needs of a student with a psychological illness and necessary directions were made to the relevant places in line with their demands.

9) A student with orthopedic and neurological comfort and transferring a scooter with a battery in the school was sent to the service to be repaired several times during the year, and the vehicle support was constantly provided by our university to send the battery-powered vehicle to the service and to transfer it back to our student. was met by.

10) Blue Focus 40 Relief Screen and Keyboard (Braille Keyboard) devices have been purchased by our university and delivered to our student who has just started to the preparatory department, delivered to him and given the necessary training for the use of the device by contacting company officials and for the transportation of our student to the company and back to school. vehicle support was also provided by our university.

11) 5th Generation Blue Focus 40 Relief Screen / Notetaking device was purchased by our university and delivered to our 1 visually impaired student who has just started our university.

12) The Computer Engineering Department was contacted to install programs on the computer of 1 visually impaired student and the necessary program was installed.

13) Within the scope of the introductory week, our department was contacted with the preparatory teachers and law school teachers for a student who has a visual impairment who came to get information about the preparatory and law faculty, and with the library unit to inform the preparatory department about the educational processes and possibilities for the students with visual impairments.  The necessary meeting was held with our visually impaired students who are continuing their education at our university and promotion was carried out.

14) A meeting was held with our student and his mother to determine the needs of a student who passed from the preparation to the department and who had attention deficit and learning disability, and then a meeting was held with the advisor for the new term and necessary information was provided.

15) Due to the orthopedic problem of 1 student, temporary transportation between buildings was provided safely, service vehicle support was provided to the side, and faculties were organized and arrangements were made to provide necessary coordination with the security unit and other administrative units to use the elevators of the law school.

17) Our student with 1 visual impairment applied to our unit for not being able to work for the visa exams because they could not access the pdf version of their course notes and books, and e-mails were sent to their teachers for their access to the lecture notes upon request of the body student for braille keyboard training, orientation. Also, information was provided about the subject and a PDF version of the grades of all courses was provided.  

16) Because 1 student cannot reach easy access between the buildings within the campus due to the disability, all the classrooms in the faculty are gathered in the same building, the need for a sink specially designed close to the classrooms, the grades are provided online, the assistant support in the midterm and final exams and additional time for the request to be given. Necessary information was provided and arrangements were made by contacting the EÖDK counselor instructor, the instructors who entered all of our students' courses, and the building supervisor. At the same time, it was considered that the classes were in a noiseless environment while providing a separate class for our students. The Human Resources Planning Department was contacted and arrangements were made to arrange the requested exam locations according to the exam schedule of our student. Again, a table and cupboard specially designed for our students to use in the sink, 4 seats and 4 ramps specially designed to be used in all classrooms with their computers to facilitate easy transportation with wheelchairs in each classroom. it is given. Also, the relevant units were discussed and arrangements were made to move the desks of our students, which were specially designed for them, to the exam places one by one.

The study titled “Therapy with Creative Visual and Auditory Art in Children with Special Needs”, which is studying at the Ministry of National Education, Celal Yardim Primary School , has been carried out under the title of community service under the protocol of Yeditepe University and Kadıköy District Directorate of National Education. Yeditepe University Faculty of Education, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department, Psychology Department lecturers and faculty members contributed to the study. Coordination of the study PT. Project partners; The evaluation meetings of the “Super Palsy Project”, which is the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, RIBEM Risky Child Counseling Center, SERÇEV (Children Association with Cerebral Palsy) and started in 2017, were hosted by Yeditepe University (https: // superpalsi.com) (ANNEX-5).

A total of 396 people, 44 of whom are the University's Disabled Students Counseling and Coordination unit representatives and 5 of other institutions, participated in the 13th University without Barriers Workshop hosted by our university between 10-11 April 2019. In this workshop; To discuss how our students can contribute better to their participation in university life on an equal basis, and to gain business life as well-equipped and strong individuals, panels involving various topics were held. In these panels, the concepts, processes under the headings of accessibility, communication, employment, the use of supportive technology in education and engineering and the functioning of the IEDC units were discussed and discussed with our participants and graduate students. At the same time, 60 invited speakers from different disciplines attended our workshop and shared their valuable information and suggestions with us. Conferences, panel talks, verbal papers and reports of the workshop groups given at the workshop, “13. Prepared and published as “Workshop Book for Universities without Barriers”. This book will be presented to the Higher Education Institution, University of Disabled Universities and published on our website without disabilities.
Disability and Community (PTR 250) was opened as an elective course in the 2018-2019 Fall semester, and students in the Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department and other departments of our university can choose this course.
           The total expenditure made in the 2017-2018 academic year is 60,000 TL (ANNEX-6).
